Inside your computer is something called a sound card; this is what you plug your headphones into. What the sound card does is it reads data on your computer and determines what sound needs to be played and when, then it takes a copy of the data that it has determined is sound and instantly converts it into a signal which is sent to your headphones, then your headphones convert it into sound.
