Vital Capacity is the amount of air you can exhale after inhaling air. Exercise increases your vital capacity as the muscles require more oxygen and less carbon dioxide. This means that the lungs inhale more oxygen in order to exhale more carbon dioxide out of the body.

After exercise, the vital capacity increases. The cause of this is because the lungs in the body need more oxygen to supply the muscles more vital nutrients. The more someone exercises the more nutrients the body produces.

It is easier to improve what can be measured rather than what cannot be measured. Vital capacity can be measured; it is VO2max, which is a measurement of the amount of oxygen that is transported to cells in a specific amount of time. It's been understood since research done by Dr. Izumi Tabata in the 1990's that intense intervals, short bursts of exercise, followed by recovery are the most effective form of exercise for increasing VO2max. So it's not the duration of exercise that matters. If you want to increase your vital capacity, adopt and stick to a program of high intensity interval training.

Once you have been exercising over a long period of time your body will be able to inhale more oxygen for the muscles. This will allow more carbon dioxide to be exhaled. Joseph and Dale
