As a flak round is fired into oncoming aircraft it is detonated at a pre-determined altitude causing shrapnel to tear into anything coming into its path. This shrapnel is devastating to aircraft, particularly the engines, equipment and personnel housing areas, as they are highly fragile and precision pieces of equipment.
