Infiltration of pollutants to the groundwater level can change its composition and excessive pumping can lead to lowering of water table. By diverting the rivers and canal construction, the natural recharge of groundwater can change which may lead to both increase and decrease in water table depending on the area under consideration.

A:A recent study (2012) is showing that when we remove groundwater, for whatever reason, it does not find its way back underground. Rather it finds its way into our waterways where it eventually adds to rising sea levels. Nothing to do with global warming, just human covetousness.
