Starvation and mal-nurishment can lead to a lack of nurtients that are vital to the body. All organ, especially the lungs and heart, can be affected as it will weaken the organ, place stress / excess strain on them, cause organ malfunction, and can even lead to organ failure.

For each inch of fat that you put on, the body has to lay down about a mile of tiny blood vessels called capillaries to supply the fat cells with blood. This means there's more demand for oxygen in the body. The lungs have to meet the demand.

Obesity also increases the chances of sleep apnea and other respiratory syndromes. Severe obesity can affect a person's ability to ventilate the lungs fully.

Snoring is a problem which can is related to respiration. Other problems like pain in joints are seen commonly. Problems like disturbed sleep, called "apnea" which causes people to stop breathing for brief periods. This causes interruption of sleep throughout the night and causes sleepiness during the day. It also causes heavy snoring. Respiratory problems associated with obesity occur when added weight of the chest wall squeezes the lungs and causes restricted breathing. The sleep apnea is also connected with high blood pressure.

Anorexia does not directly affect the lungs, but it can slowly begin to cause problems. A lack of proper nutrition and excessive strain due to exercise can cause stress on the lungs. Fluid build up, sports-induced Asthma, strain, and injury to the lungs may occur. A weakened immune system, as a result of the anorexia, can also make an individual more prone to lung or upper respritory infections.
