You can change your party affiliation by obtaining a Voter Registration Form from your state's Board of Elections, indicating the change and sending the form back.

Each state has its own unique requirements and deadlines regarding registering or changing party affiliation.

Being an Independent does not mean being a member of The Independent Party, it means not being a member of any party.

There are a number of parties that have the word "independent" or "independence" in their names. You can pick one and join if you want.

As for registering as a member of one party or another, normally you can go to your county court house and file a change to your voter registration, just as you would for a change of address. If you want to change from being a member of a party to not being a member of any party, that is when you leave the place on the form blank where it asks for name of party on your voter registration, or you write the word "independent" (lower case).

In most states you must be a registered member of a political party to vote in that party's Primary Election. A few states have open Primaries, where each voter can vote in one and only one Party's Primary, regardless of their party registration.

Unless you are an elected official there is nothing to do to switch parties. Nobody keeps an official record of party membership except the parties and they will take money from anybody and are happy to call you a member. For closed primaries, you only need to declare your party on election day at the polls.

If you are an officer in a party or are a member of Congress, party membership becomes more important, but all you have to do is announce that you are switching. Your new party may not make not make you an officer or support you in your next election bid - you may want to be an independent for awhile at least.

When I changed parties so I could vote in the primary, forms were available online from my county recorder. Alternatively, you could go to their office.
