Ritalin (methylphenidate), works on the central-nervous-system in your body, as a mild stimulant. There are many uses for it, including helping people who have narcolepsy (falling asleep at inappropriate times), treats hiccups after anesthesia, treats ADHD, stroke recovery, among other things. It has a potential to be abused and become addictive. Continued abuse can cause people to have psychotic episodes. I'm sorry but the above Answer does not accurately or unbiasly depict the drug or explain or answer the question that was asked. To Answer the question, Ritalin works to increase certain nuero transmitters, specifically "Therapeutic Doses of Oral Methylphenidate Significantly Increase Extracellular Dopamine in the Human Brain".1 Dopamine is responsible for learning by increasing the "reward" response which basically tells the brain to "encode" information it learns by providing a "teaching signal" which tells the brain to "remember things" because it is good to do so. Dopamine dysfunction is responsible for decline in mental functions, such as memory, attention, and problem-solving. Ritalin Also increases Seratonin slightly "Serotonin and the Therapeutic Effects of Ritalin".2 1. http://www.jneurosci.org/cgi/reprint/21/2/RC121.pdf 2. http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/full/288/5463/11a?ck=nck hope this helps :)

Ritalin is a prescription drug used to treat ADHD and ADD. It is also used to treat narcolepsy. It contains methylphenidate, a stimulant. If taken improperly, it does have the potential for abuse b/c of this ingredient. Ritalin works on the central nervous system, affecting chemicals that control hyperactivity and impulsiveness. This is why it is used to treat ADHD and ADD. It is used to treat narcolepsy b/c its stimulant property signals the central nervous system to remain alert, assisting the patient in staying awake. In people with ADD/ADHD it actually calms them. If a person without those disorders were to take it, it would make them hyper. It boosts dopamine and serotonin in the brain. Those with ADHD/ADD have out of whack neurotransmitters, which lowers their dopamine and serotonin levels.

Can a child on Ritalin have constricted pupils?

I am an adult and I started to take Ritalin 4 days ago. Usually I have dilated pupil, but with Ritalin they are quite constricted. I looked around in my text books and it is supposed to be the opposite to pupil are supposed to be more dilated. I also took effexor last month and my pupils were extra dilated (almost completely black). Yep I am not a professional, but it is very strange. Nevertheless even if with Ritalin my pupils are constricted my eye are very sensitive to light. My own theory will be that in some person Ritalin will increase the eye sensibility to light and than limit the amount by closing the pupil. Makes sense for me but I will still look around.
