If you need to stop metal from rustin further try putting rust converter on it (follow the istructions) then paint it wth a epoxy type paint designes for metal and wet coditiona.
Galvanizing steel with a more reactive metal like zinc helps because it reacts with air or water by losing it's electrons instead of steel and so prevents steel from rusting.....hope that helped XD
