Well, to answer your question, first understand that the skin is part of the body's integumentary system. This is essentially the skin and all of it's appendages, like fingernails, for instance.

Next understand that bacteria is everywhere. On doorknobs, on tables etc. If you didn't have your skin, all of this bacteria would have a panoramic, scenic route directly into your blood stream. Most ailments, like the common cold, are bad enough without this happening!

The integumentary system also assists with thermoregulation. This is a fantastic adaptation mechanism wherein your skin, via a process called homeostasis, keeps your body temperature at approximately the same temperature regardless of your outside surroundings. Without the skin doing this, people would be much more susceptible to hypothermia and heatstroke.

To sum things up, the skin helps prevent disease by obstructing the bacteria people come in contact everyday, as well as helping the body adapt to new environmental conditions.
