There are three different main elements to the flag. The first is a small Union Jack flag representing the country's history as a British colony. The second is a large star that represents the commonwealth. The final is a group of stars that represent the Southern Cross.

There are six stars on the Australian flag.

The five stars on the right hand side of the Australian flag represent the constellation called 'The Southern Cross'. This constellation is unique to the southern skies, and was a valuable navigation aid to early sailors.

The seven-pointed star beneath the Union Jack is the Commonwealth star, or Federation star. It has seven points, with six of the points representing the six states of Australia, and the seventh representing Australia's two mainland territories as well as its numerous external (offshore) territories.
