Atomic radius decreases as one moves from left to right across a period. As one moves across a period in this manner, one more electron and one more proton are each added to the atom. However, the electrons are all in the same or similar energy levels. Because of this, they do not shield the positive charge of the extra proton well from the other valance electrons and they all experience a greater charge, causing them to be pulled closer to the nucleus, thereby reducing the atomic radius.

As we go left to right in a period, the nuclear charge becomes stronger and stronger, and the electrons get added in the same shell, so there is no appreciable inter-electronic repulsion. Thus, the size decreases due to more attraction.
