The epidermis is the outermost layer of the skin, composed of terminally differentiated stratified squamous epithelium, acting as the body's major barrier against an inhospitable environment. It is the thinnest on the eyelids at .05 mm and the thickest on the palms and soles at 1.5 mm. There are several functions of the epidermis:

1) Protection against abrasion

2) Protection from the sun's radiation

3) First line of immune system defense

4) Protection from water loss

5) Protection from heat loss

6) Covers the body; interface with the outside

7) Sensory perception

The epidermis protects the rest of the skin in a number of ways. The keratin in the epidermis provides waterproofing. Melanin in the epidermis protects the DNA of the underlying cells from UV radiation. The multiple dead layers of the outer parts of the epidermis slough off when abraded to protect the underlying skin from mechanical damage. The sebum layer provides additional capacity for water conservation, as well as the acid mantle that prevents infection.
