How does the insurance company decide whether to total or repair the car is there a formula? |

I would like to piggyback on this question with some details of my own. Is there any damage that would automatically total the car? For instance if the frame is bent, but the cost of repairs would be less than the value would they still total the car? Straightening a frame would weaken it and potentially lead to more injuries and greater damage in the future.
