In Florida, it is almost cut and dry. There the prosecutor charges a defendant with a number of crimes, or at least he can. On each issue, the jury reaches a verdict of guilty or not guilty. It could be, on count one, guilty, on count two, not guilty, on count three, guilty... Then there is an investigation. Then there is the sentencing. Then the number of guilty verdicts determine points. Each sentence has a certain length according to the number of points. If there were three guilty verdicts, each sentence will have more points than someone would receive for the same thing but only had one guilty verdict. So the number of guilty verdicts determines the number of points. The number of points determines the length of the sentence. Of course, if the charge is first degree murder, any additional charges might not matter.
