The green coloring in leaves is called chlorophyll. Chlorophyll helps leaves take in light from the sun. In late summer, the days begin to get shorter. Leaves get less light each day. This causes trees to stop making food in their leaves. The leaves begin to die. The chlorophyll begins to fade away. When leaves lose their chlorophyll, they lose the green coloring and show what other colors are in the leaves that the dark geen chlorophyll has been hiding. Leaves that turn brown or tan have tannin in them. Warm days and cold nights make extra sugar in leaves. This extra sugar changes the pigment of some leaves, turning them red or purple. This is the same red coloring that is in other foods (beets) and flowers (the sumac), and trees (maple). The more sugar there is (and the greater the contrast of warm days and cold nighs), the brighter the colors will be. Other leaves turn orange or yelow, because of the type of pigment (coloring) that is in them. Trees like birches, poplars and elms have this pigment, just like certain foods (bananas, lemons, pumpkins).
