The person traveling through the transporter is transformed into a highly compressed data stream and channeled through the primary transporter buffer. (Starfleet transporters are equipped with a secondary buffer, should the first fail). Once the patterns have completely been turned into data they are sent to the rematerialization site thus completing the 'beaming' process.
The episode of Regg being alive while in transport really screwed this transporter concept up.
In the fictional world of Star Trek the device used to Teleport people is called the Transporter.
Transported Room 3 is not the only transporter room used in Star Trek The Next Generation. They do use them all throughout the story.
Either the ship's transporter, or shuttle craft.
