By rights The Tempest is a comedy: it ends happily and with the romantic couple getting together. But it is also unlike other comedies. The lead actor plays a nobleman, a Duke no less, and a lot of the plot has to do with his political exile and his revenge on his usurping brother, although in the end he forgives him. There are no less than two plots to murder someone in the story; both are foiled. So the subject matter is darker than most comedies (something like As You Like It), although the ending is the same. It is much closer to the more traditional comedy than Measure for Measure, All's Well that Ends Well and Troilus and Cressida, which is really hard to call a comedy.
