Best Answer

It is believed to have had a beginning, some 14 billion years ago.

Since it seems to be expanding faster and faster, it is quite possible that it goes on forever in time into the future.

Does space go on and on forever?

Space goes on as far as there are celestial objects to occupy it. Space and time (to astronomers) are mutually dependent functions - they call it "space-time". Everything in the universe is moving away from everything else continually, and hence, space continues to grow/time continues to go on. A better question is: Will this expansion go on forever? Current view among astrophysicists is "yes".

Does the Great Red Spot go on forever?

Obviously it has not gone on "forever" , as that is an indeterminte amount of time and nothing lasts forever. Even the energy that resides in the universe itself will eventually fade & the universe will die. Jupiter's Red Spot however was first seen in 1831 ordescribed asa "permanent spot" as early as 1665 and 1713, so it has been anactive storm for at leastbetween 182 to 348 years.

Another theory has the this universe bleeding into others in which case it is possible for material to last for a much longer period of time.

When would the universe end?

The expansion of the Universe is accelerating; it seems it will continue expanding forever. In this case, there won't be any specific date for an "end of the Universe"; however, the amount of usable energy will decrease over time, and the time will come when there won't be enough usable energy to support life.
