Vaccines are dead or weakened viruses or bacteria. They generally cannot make us sick because they are dead or weak. However, our body cannot tell the difference between dead or alive enemies. This is because the enemies have little markers or flags on the outside, which can be recognized by the body. The body then copies the information on the markers or flags and creates antibodies with this information copied onto them. Antibodies circulate in the blood and whenever they run into these markers they will attach to the cell with the same marker and attack it with chemicals and signal the other antibodies to come attack also. The body continues to make antibodies for a long time after it senses a new marker.

So what this means is that when you get a shot, you don't get sick, and your body protects itself from future meetings with the same type of germ (virus or bacteria) for a long time. Sometimes you need more than one shot to get the body into action.

Some diseases have no vaccine, so you can't be safe from those diseases. Fortunately, there are vaccines available for many of the most horrible and serious diseases. Some diseases have even been nearly eradicated and we don't see them much anymore due to vaccination programs. (Polio is one we don't see alot anymore but it used to cause lots of suffering and destroy people's ability to stand or walk- now we hardly hear about it anymore).

Your body's immune system works by detecting foreign agents like bacteria and viruses, then creates what are known as antibodies that help kill or disable them. Vaccinations introduce a weakened version (sometimes as near dead, or sometimes as slightly altered so that their usual destructiveness is diminished or removed) so that your body can develop the antibodies for the disease without having to actually fully fight off the disease, thereby protecting you from future infection. Some antibodies stay in your system for very long periods of time, up to the rest of your life, some for only a few years, which is why, periodically you need to go back in and get re-vaccinated for certain diseases.
