Despite being un-dead a vampire still has a functioning anatomy. Just what a vampire's metabolism consists of isn't clearly understood; the research has just not been done. But driving a wooden stake through a vampires heart does seem to constitute enough damage to effect a demise. By indirect evidence vampires seems to have functioning, Cardio-vascular, respiratory, digestive, and (in males at least) reproductive systems.
