You need to visit the court that issued your child support order and discuss your case with a legal advocate if you cannot afford a private attorney. State laws vary and you would need to explain your circumstances in detail. There is no single answer to your question.

It doesn't matter how far behind you get in the state of Tn. They will take you to court and order it be paid. If you chose to not pay after that. There is nothing done. That's why the sate is in such bad shape. Also, if the parent is put in jail for a different reason, there is no assistance for the other parent either. Take good look at the percent of single parents on welfare in the state. It will astound you. Looks like the Sate of Tn would do something about DEADBEAT parents.

complicated to nderstand, its 6 months in a row or if they have been behind before it is 3 months if there is proof they have had income, if a prson is working an fails to report it within 10 days of starting a job there is penalty if it goes 3 months with out report it is an automatic 90 days in jail weather they have ever been behind befoe or not, if the person has had more the 1500 dollars forced from tax return because they fail to pay willingly sentance increses to 12-15 months anythinh over 1 months is prison time. if someone lkees there past amount under a month behind and makes an effort the courts will give grace if they dont and hve failed to report jobs, have caused other parent to track down and report for them or has repeatedly had it forced from taxes courts will find them irresponible granting a new parenting plan to other parent to ajust as that parent wants will put them in jail and work them in jail so other parent will recieve even when the other is in jail, when released jbs have to be reported witrhin 48 hours or jail again, GOOD NEWS FOR PAYEES if yoyu are out of work and have always reported when you did work courts will show mercy! BOTTOM LINE pay your child support or you will go to jail and can lose all parental rights. child support is needed by main parent and is never even half the cost it takes to really support a kid, i have a 4 year old and get 434 a month but it cost over 500 just to feed him.

Do you have to pay child support if you file for visitation rights?

Yes. Children are not for sale or barter. You have a right to visitation even if you don't pay child support - one has nothing to do with the other. Of course if you go to court and petition for visitation, you will get it, but they will also notice that you are deliquent and, as a separate matter, expect you to pay it. You can face jail time if you are too far behind.
