The orbit of Mars is eliptical (as are the orbits of other planets). That means it is farther from the sun at one point and then closer at another. We call the farthest point from the sun in a planet's orbit aphelion, and the closer point perihelion. For Mars, aphelion is 249,209,300 km and perihelion is 206,669,000 km.
