Alligators can NOT run at 35 miles per hour, as the previous answerer said. 35 miles an hour is how fast a horse runs, or an Olympic speed skater-- it's faster than a deer. People tend to make outrageous claims about crocodilians with no basis. Just today I was on an everglades tour and the guide said they could go 35mph on land.

A fast alligator might go 8 or 9 miles per hour on land. According to a study in Australia, young crocodiles might be able to reach about 10.5 miles/hour over a few yards, but this species has the ability to run at a different gait, called a gallup, which alligators cannot (they can only belly run). It is also important to note that Alligators never chase prey, they are ambush predators. They only 'run' back into the water, and, as in the above study, are running away from something, not towards it.

On land they never get any faser than a slow belley crall, but apon leaping out of the water to catch pray they can acelerate at speeds of 35 mph.
After a alligator builds up as much energy as they can run for about a 30-40 yard distance at about 30 miles an hour. But after they use they energy up they will basically seem dead cause they have no energy left. But alligators really won't chase you unless you try to raid a females nest. And there's not really a good way to get away either. Alot of people say to zigzag but my friend lost a boot doing that. Then some people say climb a tree. Well alligators will wait weeks for you to come down the tree. So the best way to get away is not get near in the first place.

Depends on what you mean. They can snap, turn and lunge real fast, but are fairly slow when covering longer distances - particularly on land.
