I took a stray Pit Bull in and she has become about the best dog anyone could expect to have. One of the firs things I noticed about her is that she could run very, very fast. So, one day I strapped a small GPS unit to my dog and took her off to a large park. She trains very easily so executing such "speed" runs isn't too tough...the tough part is giving her incentive to run. I had her sit down, and commanded her to stay as I backed away from her. I got about 50 yds away then cheered her on to come as I took off in a sprint. We did this three times. 1st run: 28mph 2nd run: 36 mph (wow!) 3rd run: 25mph (getting tired?) It's not exactly Greyhound speeds, which I understand to be 42-45mph...but not too shabby either. I've taken her to a local dog park numerous times and thus far there hasn't been any dog that she cannot keep up with...even a Whippet. On one unfortuneate occasion when I was hiking with her through some woods with her off leash, we encountered a herd of 10-15 deer abouit 30 yds ahead. She took off after them (only time she has ever disobeyed me) and caught up to them with no problem...then bounded Into the Woods after them when they left the trail. Took me an hour to find her...right back at the spot where she left the trail. Bad dog.
Most Pit Bulls run approx. 25mph on average.
