The food produced by the plant is eaten by insects or worms and those are eaten by the birds. So indirectly plant is the main source of energy every animal eats. because worms and insects eat the food produced by the plant and they are later on eaten by birds and birds are eaten by any other animal.
So that's how a bird consumes energy from a plant. =)
