There isn't really an amount of time on how often you need to clean your pipe or bong. The rule of thumb I use is the amount of resin built up inside it. All these ways for cleaning are for a pipe or bong bowl. I don't know how to clean the actual bong. This first way is very easy and can be done with just about anything but will not come out as clean Once its getting really thick I usually scrape it off, sometimes smoking it (note this is really gross tasting and most likely very unhealthy). Use your lighter to heat up the resin. This makes it much easier to remove. Then you will need something simple that can fit into your pipe to do the scraping. A bent safety pin works well but anything can do. (I have used to toothpicks to some success)
Another way is to go to any head shop and buy a cleaning product. I have never tried this but have heard good things.
Last way is to boil the pipe. I just did this for my first time with moderate success. I was able to get a lot of resin out that I normally couldn't with my scraping method. I recommend trying this out because its simple and yielded decent results. Not to mention can't beat the price.

actually there is a cheap and extremely sucsessful way to clean the inside of a bong. if you put about a quarter of an inch layer of uncooked white rice, and about an inch layer of rubbing alchohol inside your bong and mix around the contents for about 5 minutes, it will almost completely take off all the resin.
