Australia's relationship with Asia

There were originally conflicts between Australia and certain parts of Asia such as Japan and China, particularly with the influx of Chinese during the gold rushes. Now, the alliance between Australia and Asia is stronger than ever, with many immigrants from Asia living in the country. Our relationship with Asia since federation has changed significantly. Whilst our relationships have grown stronger and weaker with changing governments, changing leaders and changing circumstances (i.e. North Korea and Indonesia), it has in all, become more significant, especially regarding trade. Since federation we have become a part of many economic and trade blocs. Our membership with APEC and close relationships with members of ASEAN have brought about FTA (free trade agreements) and partnerships and help, in time of need. This can be seen with our peacekeeping missions (RAMSI and UNIFET) and expenses in foreign aid distriubtion.

Australia has introduced the Colombo plan that allows Asian students to study here. The abolishment of the White Australia Policy was also another big step in accepting Asians. There are also many counter terrorism alliences that have been formed with aisa and the recent Tsunami aid is an example of Australia still tyring to improve our relationship. We are valnerable to attacks from our larger Asain neighbors and so we help them as much as we can to prevent this. I don't know the specific events that have lead to our involvemnt with Asia since WW2, i am doing an assignment on this maybe someone can help?

AnswerAfter World War Two, Australia began to realised the importance of maintaining strong relationships with its Pacific neighbours. The vital economic and strategic significance of Japan and Indonesia to Australia was officially recognised. This was in part done through Australia's involvement with the Association of South-East Asian (ASEAN). The Federal Government also worked hard to dispel Australia's international reputation of being racist. Whitlam also wanted to reintroduce 'Doc' Evatt's policy of internationalism. Whitlam's term in office demonstrated another trend in foreign relations. From now on, Prime ministers were to play a major role in shaping foreign relations. Whitlam had a special interest in China. It was, for example, Whitlam who in October 1973 undertook Australia's first official tour of communist china.
