it affected Cuba in both good and bad ways. The good: education free, free medicine. The bad: people gain very little money, Cubans are still very poor and many try to go to America for a chance at a better life.

Fidel Castro led the Cuban revolution and ascended to power in 1959. With his socialist leanings he soon became a close Soviet ally in Americas. Presence of Soviet ally so close to the mainland USA was a cause of great concern for Americans, specially during the days of raging cold war. CIA supported Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961 worsened the relations between the two countries and Cuba responded by being at the center of Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. This was the closest the cold war ever came to transitioning into a full scale conflict. Soviet Union valued Cuba as an ally and used it against USA during the cold war.
