1) Catchers wear helmets instead of a regular baseball cap while behind the plate.
2) They wear masks that are like a 'bird cage' instead of the old mask. The metal is further away from the face than the old masks.
3) Some catchers wear masks that are a combination of a helmet and a mask instead of wearing a mask and helmet seperately.
4) Some catchers wear shin guards that cover the lower area of the thigh instead of those that stop at the knee.
5) Chest protectors have padding for the front of the right shoulder that old style protectors didn't.
