One significant way China's "One Child" policy affects their population is this.
China has an ancient and deep bias toward male children. Often, infant daughters were so undesirable that they were drown soon after birth. That bias still lingers, yes, even today. So, if a family is only afforded one child, they will take great, even drastic measures to ensure that their one child is indeed male.
This leads to a significant gender imbalance in the population. With too many of one gender, the ability of the population to continue is brought into eventual question.
