Until recently childhood was much shorter for most people in Western countries. Till about 1950, compulsory schooling ended at age 14, and the majority of teenagers started work then, and the numbers staying on in formal education beyond age 18 were tiny. My own impression is that there was a strong desire to grow up quickly and assume adult responsibility early. However, much of this relates to adolescence rather than childhood. From my own memories, parents were much less worried about safety (except where there were obvious dangers). There was less supervision and more freedom, especially from about age 8+. Having said that, in one important respect we were more strictly supervised. There were very definite times by which we had to be back home and in bed. Even at age 11, I had to be in bed by 8.15pm latest. My parents attached importance to having a childproof evening. :) Joncey A little postscript.
