signals from satelites and cell towers have exposed us to cancer-causing levels of radiation. They have also given us the ability to be free of wires while still being constant reach. Humans are very sociable by nature and need constant connectivity.

A little over 150 years ago if you wanted to talk to someone you had to travel and do it face to face, send a representative or mail a letter.

This applied to pretty much all forms of communication:

  • If you wanted to talk to your wife or girlfriend.
  • Conduct a business deal.
  • Purchase something from abroad.
  • Negotiate with a foreign nation.
  • Obtain news.

Then along came the telegraph which sped things up a little, although early telegraph installation was costly and prone for high maintenance.

Add the telephone. Quickly this medium became the preferred method of communication. Large infrastructures were set up to support this and the speed of communication increased exponentially. This increased led to increased in consumerism as well as international industry. The only drawback to this was it was basically a static system, you had to sit at home or a a desk to be able to use it.

Skip forward about 50 or 60 years and we have mobile phones, they can literally connect us to any corner of the world within a few seconds. This is now a portable system (no longer static), it can be used for basic communications, to access the internet, make purchases on-line, send emails, read the news and call assistance if need be

People are always communicating now on their cellphones and because of them we are more connected than ever.

Another PerspectiveCell phones have made people less connected with the people they are with and with their environment. They have made it possible for people to spend their waking lives talking about unimportant things while they bumble along being rude to others and in many cases, creating dangerous situations.

If you observe any public space you can see parents pushing their babies in strollers while they are talking on the phone to someone else. They are completely ignoring their children. If you look around you are likely to see couples or friends walking together or sitting together in a restaurant and one is jabbering away on their phone, ignoring their companion. Drive down any highway and there will be that driver, ambling along, below the speed limit, in the passing lane, blabbing away on their cell phone, completely oblivious to the speeding cars that must go around. Many people have been killed by drivers who are talking on their phones instead of paying attention to their driving. In elevators, at the counter at the Post Office, in line at the grocery store, in church, at the library, on the train- we are all hearing stupid conversations we don't want to hear, often about very private matters by people who are brain dead to their immediate surroundings.

Well, for one thing, people basically expect you to always be available to talk now. In the days before cell phones, you called someone, you left a message, and you hoped to hear back from them within 24 hours. Now, if you miss a call, 2 minutes later you get a text saying, "Where are you? Why aren't you answering your phone?" It's like everybody's a doctor now and has to be on call 24/7.
