Since the 1950s, sitcoms have become more provocative. The subject matter and language came to reflect a more sophisticated, adult audience. In the 1950s, most shows were family-based, depicting an idyllic family life. The 1970s was a breakout decade for sitcoms. Shows like "All in the Family" and "Maude" tackled issues like politics, sex, religion, racism, and chauvinism. Characters were portrayed in a more realistic light, complete with flaws and bad tempers and foul language. Censorship has been greatly reduced over the years; it is non-existent on most cable channels.
