There is a big cast-iron frame inside, mounted on a sound board, over which the strings are tensioned to phemoninal poundage. Only cast-iron can take the strain. Add to that the key and hammer assemblies. Then the piano is clad in thick, dense wood to add depth and life to the tone.

Would you like a piano made of stone?

Plus, it would have been easier to obtain wood and shape that then to shape something like stone into a piano. Also think about the sound difference.

For an upright piano it is around 300 to 500 pounds, for a baby grand piano it is around 500 to 650 pounds, and for the grand piano it is around 700 to 1,200 pounds.
