it depends on the type of wood. SOme have fuels that burn at higher or lower temperatures. It also depends on the water content of the wood. Char can be ignited at relatively low temperatures, whereas wet oak will take much longer

According to this site: http://www.enviroalternatives.com/fireQ&A.html (which is a marketing site) Oak was measured burning at between 900 to 1200 degrees F in the hottest part of the fire, and between 200 and 400 degrees F in the gases around the fuel.

The temperature must be at least 1100 degrees for the firewood to burn efficiently enough to burn all the gases that are released. Wood will burn (smolder) at lower temperatures (from 540 degrees and up) but will not produce enough heat and will allow dangerous gases to escape without burning.

Yes, wood burns. It burns better if gasoline or oil is poured over the wood before the match lights the wood. But if no gasoline or oil is available, then it will burn. As long as it is not wet from rain or water, then it will burn. If its wet, nothing will burn. Even putting gasoline on the wood when its wet won't do any good.

There is no one simple answer- it will depend on the moisture content of the wood, of the air used in burning the wood, the type of wood, and the draft of air. It is possible to obtain temperatures around 2,500 F under ideal conditions.
