Where did the idea of 1999 come from? It was 1947. There had been political and other pressure for independence from many Indians before the war which were resisted by the British, but after the war the British were too weak and exhausted to resist anymore. It had nothing to do with gratitude for help in the war from Indians. In fact, many Indians formed a special force to strike against the British while they were engaged with the Axis powers and the Japanese. It is true, however, that the Indians in the British army were gallant fighters who served Britain well.

Two persons were responsible for India's independice - Gandhi (non-violence) and Adolf Hitler (voilence). If it were not Adolf HItler (and WWII) India could have been a british colony even today in 2010 !! Hitler bombed the whole Europe and British to death and also died in the process and India got independence free of cost without any blood bath and voilence !! HItler did a very good job of bombing British to hell and Gandhi did a good job of non-violence!! India is the only country in the world which did not attack any country and did not bomb any country!! A truly peace loving country India is!! Even today India does not attack any country in the world!!
