In economics and sociology, work is defined as human activity that is necessary or compulsory for survival which produces and sells goods or provides services. There is always some form of monetary or financial compensation in return for work. In general, work is defined as any physical or mental activity directed toward a particular goal. In economics, the goal is earning money that will ensure one's survival. Therefore work is primarily an economic activity. It is also primarily a necessary or compulsory activity. We need to work whether we want to or not. If we do not work, we will be poor, unhappy, unhealthy, and probably even die, most likely from starvation due to lack of food. However, not all human activity is economic in nature nor is necessary for survival. Humans engage in certain activities not because they are necessary nor bring in a financial return but because they are by their very nature pleasurable or fulfill a certain desire that elevates the human spirit. Non-economic activities include attending religious services, studying at school or university, doing household chores, watching television, exercise, and playing games and sports with the exception of professional sports.
