D.N.A. is used to help solve crimes by the fingerprint in the DNA which can track down the person at the scene of the crime. Also, if a sample of the body is left (i.e. blood, any other bodily fluids, hair, skin) is left at the scene, through DNA finger printing, the criminal(s) involved would be identified.

Each person has their own DNA profile, unless they are identical twins, in which case they would have the same profile, but unique fingerprints. Forensic scientists can use the DNA profile of a suspect and compare it to a profile that they found at the crime scene. Any DNA profiles that are on record, the same way fingerprints can be on record, is kept in CODIS (Combined DNA Index System). This is one way of positively identifying a person.

Each person's DNA is unique to them, and only them; no one's DNA is an identical match to anyone else's. When someone commits a crime, whether it is rape, murder, etc. they quite often inadvertenly (unknowingly) leave their DNA at the crime scene, or on the victim. Example: If a woman is raped, then the perpetrator's DNA (semen, hair, skin cells, blood) can be matched to the rapist. If the rapist is caught, or if his DNA is already in the criminal data base, then his DNA can be matched to the DNA left on, or near the victim, thus resulting in his arrest, conviction and incarceration.

No two people, with the exception of identical twins, have the same genetic makeup, the same DNA. A DNA fingerprint of DNA recovered at a crimescene can be produced by gel electrophoesis and compared to a suspect's DNA fingerprint.

The DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid) of each individual is distinctly different from that of every other person. As DNA is present in every cell of the human body, and the cells are shedded continuously from the skin, DNA found at a crime scene may originate from a suspect. DNA tests and the comparison of the results can then determine of the DNA is from the suspect or not, and is strong forensic evidence in court - so long as the DNA was found on, ie. a murder weapon, or the victim themselves.
