Joe started off his life by being put up for adoption. While in the orphanage his director yelled at him for eating toothpaste. Later in his life another women hurt him. She was a con-woman. The women in the story always treat Joe poorly. Because of this Joe isolates himself from the community. He doesn't know who he is because he was put up for adoption. The town does not accept him.
