Starting on February 11, 1858, Bernadette Soubirous, a sickly 14 year old girl, experienced a series of 18 apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary at a grotto near Lourdes, France. It took many years for the Church to confirm the visions as genuine and Bernadette underwent much torment and discomfort because of her claims of a Heavenly visitor. Today Lourdes is the destination of many pilgrims from around the world who come to pray at the shrine and partake of the miraculous water at the spring that was uncovered by Bernadette.
