Most notably the anime adaptions for both are done by the same studio (Kyoto Animation). They also both have the same lead voice actress (Hirano Aya), and many of Lucky Star's supporting characters' voice actors are carried over from Haruhi. Lucky Star references Haruhi a great deal, including characters having Haruhi songs as ringtones, the characters going to a Hirano Aya concert, Konata cosplaying Haruhi and taking part in the Hare Hare Yukai dance at a cosplay cafe, and Shiraishi Minoru singing Wa-wa-wa-wasuremono in a live action ending sequence (a reference to his character's most well known line from Haruhi). Both plot-wise and character-wise they're entirely difference series, but due to the studio and consistant references back to Haruhi they have something of a similar feel.

What is Lucky Star about?

Lucky Star, the anime, follows a group of four teenage girls (who are soon joined by many more) who experience the ordinary challenges of everyday Japanese life. It is a collection of short and humorous scenes which centre themselves heavily around Japanese and Otaku culture. The main characters - Konata, Kagami, Tsukasa and Miyuki - are the centre of the series although many short scenes involve comedic sidekicks and funny situations with other characters. An episode of Lucky Star includes about 10 different, sometimes interrelated, scenarios including an episode of Lucky Chanel which appears at the end of each show. There is no defined plot and all episodes are simply a collation of events. The show does, however, develop the relationships of the characters and interrelates loosely to other episodes. Lucky Star includes a lot of references to popular anime and manga (particularly The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya) and so attracts an audience who has a wide knowledge of those shows.
