How is New Years Day celebrated around the world? In: New Years Eve |
[Edit] |
Answer
In Scotland our biggest celebration of the year is Hogmanay. It begins on New Year's Eve with family and friends gathering for a meal and a ceilidh. This could be in someone's home or in a village hall. Dancing; singing and story telling are all important parts of a ceilidh. Whisky is also important!
The ceilidhing goes on until midnight when the bells ring in the New Year and the singing of Auld Lang Syne (pronounced sign NOT zign). Then the first footing takes place. We visit all the friends and family within walking distance, as driving is certainly out by now, and take a lump of coal to each house, where we receive a whisky. The Celts highly respect symbolism and the coal represents prosperity and the whisky represents hospitality.
Bed time is usually about 5am.
Who ever hosted the Hogmanay do is hosted on the 1st and family do the whole thing again.
