Many North Americans grow up exchanging paper valentines with their classmates. There is almost no romantic aspect of these valentines. They are just friendship cards. As we grow, the romance aspect increases. We give valentines to the people we have a crush on. Later, the people we love.

Adults in a romantic relationship often exchange gifts. These gifts most often take the form of flowers, candy, etc.
