How is a compass used as a navigational aid?

Answer:
Basically, triangulation. You take a reading on a known landmark. Then you travel & keep track of HOW FAR you've traveled. Then you take another reading. It's TOTALLY DIFFERENT on the open ocean, where there ARE NO landmarks.
