How is a surgical abortion performed?

Answer:
You will be getting medication to soften the cervix and then sedated and the doctor will insert an instrument, called a speculum into your vagina to hold the vaginal walls apart. The he will widening (dilating) the cervix until it's about as big around as a drinking straw. The doctor will then check the walls of the uterus using a small, narrow metal loop called a curette and other medical instruments to clean the walls to be sure no tissue remains. Then he will use a suction machine that will suck the remains out (like the one a dentist use to clear the mouth of saliva) and end the pregnancy. Takes about 10 minutes.
