Acrylic yarn 100% synthetic and is essentially plastic. Because plastic in itself is cheap, it makes for an inexpensive yarn. While natural fiber yarns such as wool or cotton are spun, acrylic yarns are long incredibly thin pieces of plastic that are wrapped together.

Acrylic yarn is good to craft with when creating for someone with extensive Allergies. It is never recommended for projects that will be near extreme heat, such as potholders. Because it is inexpensive, it is great for the beginner crocheter or knitter.

Acrylic yarn is made from a polymer (a large molecule--generally when "polymer" is used, think of a type of plastic).

The acrylic thread, is is pulled out of a liquid solution, and then these threads are spun together. More and more threads are joined by spinning, until the final size of the yarn is achieved.

Is yarn the same as wool?

No. Wool is the raw material, yarn is another name for the string that's made from it. Yarn can be made from many materials including acrylic, cotton, nylon, bamboo and others. Wool can be used for many items besides yarn like socks and sweaters, for example.

Will acrylic paint on yarn make it stiff?

The short answer is a qualified yes.-If you put acrylic wall paint on a single strand of yarn (natural fiber or synthetic), the yarn will be encased in a paint that will make it more rigid, and the paint will crack if you bend the yarn.- If you put acrylic wall paint on knitted yarn (for example a sweater) the acrylic will sit on the surface and dry to a hard finish. When the yarn bends (in the washer or in use) the paint will crack and eventually start to flake off, although it will not all come off.- If you put acrylic craft or artists' paint on a single strand of yarn, you will get the same result as above.- If you put acrylic craft or artists' paint on knitted yarn, yo will also get the results above.*Note*- If your desire is to paint on a knitted piece and have the yarn stay flexible, there is a paint medium used for fabrics (you can find it at most craft stores) that will make the paint more flexible and adhere better.

Does yarn curl?

Some yarns will melt. If you are making something like a potholder that will need to withstand high temperatures, it is best to use yarn made out of cotton, which will not melt. The yarns that you do not want to use are the ones made out of nylon or acrylic, like Red Heart Super Saver Yarn, which will melt and then harden again, making a very stiff plastic-like material.

How many yards is 2 ounces?

They can't be compared. A yard is a distance, an ounce is a weight. The length of 2 ounces of yarn would depend upon the thickness of the yarn and the type of material the yarn is made of (lambs wool, acrylic, etc). I have had some luck when substituting a yarn with a replacement that was an equivalent grams per meter (ounces per yard).
