A botnet is a collection of compromised computers connected to the internet (each compromised computer is known as a 'bot'). When a computer is compromised by an attacker, there is often code within the malware that commands it to become part of a botnet. The "botmaster" or "bot herder" controls these compromised computers via standards based network protocols such as IRC and http.

The Internet usually refers to the world-wide collection of computers interconnected to each other. Not to be confused with the World Wide Web, which is the collection of web sites on the Internet, also all interconnected to each other.

A botnet is a network of "zombie" computers all connected together by a hacker. Zombie viruses are a type of malware that infect a machine and then take it over without the user's knowledge (think of a zombie from the Walking Dead). The virus then distributes itself by means of email or social media sites like Facebook or other sites like MediaFire. The virus creates an email with itself attached to it, and then sends itself to ALL of the people in your contacts book on email or your friends on Facebook. When your friend clicks on the infected message, they too become a zombie and part of the botnet.
Although every file or program has a digital origin that can be traced back, some virus creators encrypt their program and make an "armored virus" so that it will be harder to trace the creator back to their point of origin. Some hackers also use "zombie" viruses to create a botnet. A botnet is a network of two or more "zombified" computers that are under the control of the hacker without the user's knowledge. Since there could be dozens of computers comprising a botnet, this makes it very difficult to trace the hacker because you would first have to trace back all of the zombified computers.
