When a new color is formed.

This is not to be mistaken for a mixture of each of the chemicals that were combined.

For example, if a blue substance is combined with a clear substance, and the result is orange, it is a chemical change.

However, if the result is just a lighter blue, it does not necessarily indicate chemical change.

Adding heat to something can spark a chemical reaction. When the color changes, it's one of the signs of that chemical reaction happening during the process of cooking food. Cooked chicken, for example, has different properties than raw chicken; and one of those properties is the change in color.
