Um I'm pretty sure that cotton takes a lot of nutrients from the soil without putting any back in so over a long period of time only growing cotton in a field the soil will be lacking in many nutrients.

Cotton is not bad for the environment. It is an agricultural product and completely biodegradable if nothing is added to it. It is a versatile part of many fabrics. It can be coloured and woven. It can even be used as cotton batting which is basically cleaned raw cotton fibre. It is used as a cushioning layer inside plaster casts. Cotton clothing wicks away moisture (sweat) and is very comfortable in exercise and sports clothing. After its life as a shirt or pants, it can still see service as a rag. Very few people are allergic to cotton.
