First of all, no one can claim that Islam teaches non-violence. Islam does teach tolerance, but it is not a passive, non-active message.
Muslims are commanded to establish their way of life - for themselves. It is not true that Muslims believe in forcing others to convert. In fact, forced conversion is forbidden. But Muslims are commanded by God - the same way the people of Moses were commanded by God - to strive to establish God's Law for themselves as a community. For this reason, they fight.
There have always been systems of life opposed to the Law of God. Again, that is why Moses, Joshua, David and Solomon (among many many others) had to fight against the forces of unbelief. When Muslims live by Islam, they also stand as an example of a system of life. In other words, Muslims call other nations to accept the Law of God as their system. Capitalists, Communists, Hedonists, Atheists, etc. etc., hate that the Law of God be established.
The Muslim World is a different story, though. There, Muslims have been opppressed for decades - and they have been ignorant of true Islamic teachings. They are lashing out in frustration at the West which, to them, represents the forces of Satan. So Muslims make terrible mistakes. Killing innocent people is not allowed in Islam. Suicide is not allowed. The Muslim World is such a mess not because of Islam - but in spite of Islam.
In America, Muslims are able to live as a minority in peace with all others. As long as there is freedom of religion, there does not need to be a conflict. Of course, the forces of evil and the soon to come Anti-Christ will put an end to religious freedom in America. That is what I believe.

NO, it used to in south Africa when the apartheid was going on, also in some parts of north Africa which is predominantly Arab and Muslim. In general though the majorirty of African countries don't practice that or exist. Black is beautiful is really practiced and preached there.

Islam was fundamentally different from the religions practiced in Pre-Islamic Arab society. The religious beliefs of Pre-Islamic Arab society revolved around polytheism and idol worship. Islam preached monotheism and a set of beliefs which were socially and intellectually very different from the older religious beliefs.
Not certain, but I'm pretty sure that it is all of them at this point in history.
Preached is the past tense of preach.
The Romans were not a morally corrupt society because they had their standards of morality and ethics. They may not have always practiced the old fashioned virtues that they preached, but neither to we in many cases. We have to remember in dealing with any ancient society, that they (the ancient societies) existed in a different era from ours. They had different attitudes than we have. They were living in a pre-Christian era without having to deal with the Christian attitudes that so heavily influence the west today. We have to judge their morals according to their standards not ours. The Romans were not a morally corrupt society because they had their standards of morality and ethics. Yes. He had studied with and met Ghandi who used passive resistance. MLK once stated that to return hate with hate solves nothing. Violence doesn't solve problems, but to work against a problem with passive resistance does work.
"He preached to the masses.""I was there when he preached to the masses and I can tell you this; a sermon with no beer vendor is poor excuse for an outdoor event..."
Buddha preached the Middle Path or Middle Way.
